Install Floating Wall Shelves

Mount clean, bracket-free floating shelves that look like they were built into the wall. Works on drywall with stud-backed or heavy-duty anchors.

How to do it

  1. 01

    Mark your shelf position

Use painter's tape to mock up the shelf location before drilling anything. Hold the shelf against the wall and step back to evaluate height, centering, and spacing relative to furniture and other objects. A shelf that looks right in isolation often looks wrong in context — the tape costs nothing to move.

💡 Pro tip For a gallery arrangement, lay everything out on the floor first. Photograph it, then transfer measurements to the wall.
  2. 02

    Find and mark the studs

Drag your stud finder slowly across the wall at shelf height, marking both edges of each stud with a pencil dot. Most studs run 16 inches on center. Confirm with a second pass — stud finders can give false readings near pipes and boxes. Circle any confirmed stud center with a light pencil mark.

💡 Pro tip No stud finder? Drive a thin finish nail at an inconspicuous spot at baseboard height. If it hits wood after ¾ inch, you've found a stud. Move horizontally in 16-inch increments.
  3. 03

    Mark the bracket mounting holes

Hold the hidden bracket against the wall at your desired position, using the level to confirm it's plumb. Mark each mounting hole with a sharp pencil. Double-check by re-leveling — a bracket that's 2mm off will produce a shelf that looks tilted from across the room.

  4. 04

    Drill pilot holes

For stud-mounted holes, use a drill bit slightly thinner than your screw diameter — typically 1/8 inch for #10 screws. Drill straight in, perpendicular to the wall. For drywall anchor positions (no stud), use the anchor manufacturer's recommended bit size. Keep the drill level and move slowly to avoid blowout.

💡 Pro tip Wrap a piece of tape around your drill bit at the desired depth to avoid drilling too deep into the stud.
  5. 05

    Install anchors (if needed)

If your shelf position doesn't land on studs, drive toggle bolt anchors into the pilot holes. Follow the anchor package directions exactly — most require you to squeeze the toggle, insert it, then tighten until snug. Do not overtighten. For heavy shelves (books, plants, decor over 20 lbs), stud mounting is always preferable.

  6. 06

    Mount the hidden bracket

Drive your screws through the bracket into the studs (or anchors). Start all screws a few turns before tightening any — this keeps the bracket aligned. Tighten in a cross-pattern so pressure distributes evenly. The bracket should feel completely solid with zero play when you push on it.

💡 Pro tip Give the bracket a firm yank before hanging the shelf. Better to find a loose screw now than after the shelf is loaded.
  7. 07

Slide on the shelf and level

Most floating shelf kits slip over the bracket's metal rod or dowel. Slide the shelf on, then set a level on top to confirm. If the shelf is slightly off, most kits allow micro-adjustment by inserting a thin shim between the shelf and bracket body. Secure with the set screw or locking pin included in your kit.

  8. 08

Touch up and load it up

Fill any visible pilot holes or small wall nicks with a dab of paintable wall filler, let dry, and sand smooth. Once painted (if needed), the install is invisible from the front. Start loading the shelf from the back — heaviest items closest to the wall, lighter items toward the edge.

💡 Pro tip Don't max out the shelf immediately. Load it to 75% of rated capacity and check the bracket for any movement after 24 hours.

⚠️ Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the level check — even 2mm off reads as visibly crooked from across the room.
  • Trusting anchors for shelves that will hold books, plants, or anything over 15 lbs. Find the studs.
  • Over-tightening screws into drywall anchors, which strips the anchor and destroys the hold.
  • Forgetting to check for pipes or electrical behind the wall before drilling. Use a wire/pipe detector if you're unsure.
  • Installing without the shelf hardware first — always test-fit before final mounting.
